In addition to Zurich Airport, Flughafen Zürich AG currently holds stakes in nine airports outside Switzerland. In Brazil, the airports of Florianópolis, Vitória, Macaé and, since the beginning of this year, Natal are 100% owned by the company, as well as Belo Horizonte with a minority stake. Florianópolis (in the portfolio since 2017) and Vitória (in the portfolio since 2019) are among the best-rated airports in the country in terms of sustainability in the "up to 5 million passengers" category. 

Florianópolis and Vitória: Most sustainable airports in their category

The Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) awards the "Sustainable Airports" award every year. The most important evaluation criteria include climate protection, air quality, waste management and noise management. As in the previous year, Florianópolis and Vitória occupy first and second place as the most sustainable airports in their category. Both airports have implemented various measures for more sustainable airport operations: 
At both airports, the energy supply for aircraft was switched from diesel generators to electrical energy. Air conditioning is now also powered by electricity and no longer by kerosene-powered auxiliary power units on the aircraft, which saves large amounts of CO2. All operational vehicles are powered by low-emission fuel and part of the vehicle fleet has been replaced by electric vehicles. The purchase of electrical energy is based on 100% renewable energy and the new terminal buildings were built with strict attention to energy efficiency. Thanks to an on-site treatment plant, the wastewater can be reused for watering green areas and plantings, among other things. At Florianópolis, the recycling rate of waste generated at the airport itself has been increased from 39% to 81% since the takeover. In addition, both airports have achieved Level 2 in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of the Airport Council International (ACI). This means that environmental emissions have been demonstrably reduced.  

Successful international commitment 

It is not the first award for the two airports Florianópolis and Vitória. For the quality of their infrastructure, the friendliness of the staff and general passenger satisfaction, they have also been awarded “Best Airports” of all airports in Brazil for the third consecutive year by the Brazilian Ministry of Transport – with 1st place for Florianópolis and 2nd place for Vitória. Both airports also received the "Green Airport" award from ACI - also for the third time in a row.

In addition to Brazil, Flughafen Zürich AG is in Latin America also involved in the airports of Antofagasta and Iquique in Chile, Eldorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia, and Hatto International Airport in Curaçao. Furthermore a greenfield airport is currently being built in Noida, in the greater Delhi area in India, which will commence operations next year.
