Start of the second construction phase of the Skymetro modernisation

Summary

The modernisation of the Skymetro at Zurich Airport is entering its second and final construction phase. From 3 November 2026, the tunnel that has not yet been refurbished will be closed for around six months. The Skymetro will continue to operate at reduced capacity whilst the work is underway. A replacement bus service will be provided during peak times.

The Skymetro has connected the Airside Centre with Dock E since 2003. To ensure its long-term operation and create additional capacity, Zurich Airport Ltd. is upgrading the system’s control and drive technology. At the same time, the Skymetro is being converted from three-car to four-car trains. The first of two construction phases was completed in June 2026.

Continued operation during construction

The tunnel that has not yet been modernised will now be closed for the second phase of construction. Work will start on 3 November and will take place whilst the airport remains operational. During this time, the Skymetro will continue to operate in the tunnel that has already been upgraded. A replacement bus service will also be available to passengers during daily peak periods. The second construction phase is expected to last until May 2027.

Increased capacity following completion of modernisation

Once the second construction phase is complete, four-car trains will operate in both tunnels. This will increase the Skymetro’s capacity from the current 8,000 to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. With the completion of the second construction phase, the modernisation of the Skymetro will be complete.
