Unique News Flash No. 5 / Flughafen Zürich AG commits to climate protection goals
Flughafen Zürich AG has endorsed a climate protection policy. The goal is a stepwise reduction of the CO2-emissions. The CO2-emissions at Zurich airport are to decrease by 15,000 tons to a total of 20,000 tons in 2030.
The contribution of global aviation to the climate change is relatively small with approximately 2% of all anthropogenic CO2-emissions. Flughafen Zürich AG as the airport operator is part of the aviation system and commits itself to a climate protecting development of aviation, even if it only takes responsibility for approximately 10% of the CO2-emissions of the airport system.
Flughafen Zürich AG is already on track. We were able to reduce our CO2-emissions over the last decades despite traffic increase and expansion of the infrastructure. Flughafen Zürich AG emitted approximately 50,000 tons of CO2 through its own emission sources in 1991. This value has decreased to 35,000 tons to date. The emission sources of Flughafen Zürich AG include vehicles and machinery, power plant and heating systems, emergency generators as well as purchased electricity. More than 80% of the CO2-emissions stem from the central cogeneration power plant.
Flughafen Zürich AG will further reduce its CO2-emissions while considering the legal and economic framework at the airport. The airport operator has set the goals to reduce the CO2-emissions to 30,000 tons in 2020 and to 20,000 tons in 2030.
