A behind-the-scenes look on guided tours

The guided tours offer fascinating insights into various areas of work at Zurich Airport. Participants can visit the SR Technics workshops or learn more about the work of Skyguide air traffic controllers in the tower. Swissport and dnata show visitors how operations on the apron and in the passenger areas work. Cargologic also offers tours of its facilities and provides an introduction to its cargo and logistics processes. Service providers such as Autogrill by Avolta and Dufry by Avolta also invite visitors to tour their outlets and discover the wide range of careers in the food service and retail sectors.

Flughafen Zürich AG offers a variety of guided tours. Among other things, participants can accompany bus drivers around the airport premises, learn about the processes involved in operating passenger boarding bridges and supplying aircraft with energy, or explore the hidden infrastructure beneath the airport on a sewer trekking tour.

The number of participants on all guided tours is limited. Advance registration is therefore required.

Information sessions and live Q&As

In addition to the guided tours, information sessions provide practical insights into various career profiles and the corresponding entry opportunities. The “Take a seat for your future” event is aimed specifically at school students. Apprentices at Flughafen Zürich AG share first-hand experiences of their training in administration, IT, and operations and maintenance.

The airlines SWISS and Edelweiss present career opportunities in the cockpit and cabin, with SWISS also providing information about ground-based roles. Helvetic Airways presents various part-time and full-time working models for cabin crew members.

Personal interaction at the Job Meet & Greet

Another highlight is the Job Meet & Greet (in German) on 7 November 2026. From 09:30 to 17:00, all partner companies will be represented on Observation Deck B. Visitors can talk informally with HR representatives, submit their application documents and receive tips on the application process.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 4% over the prior-year period to CHF 374.2 million. The consolidated result amounted to CHF 163.7 million, up 1% year on year, which is the best half-year result in the company’s history. Earnings growth was held back by higher depreciation and financial expenses, particularly in connection with the commissioning of Noida Airport.

Increase in traffic volumes and expansion of the route network

15,793,939 passengers used Zurich Airport in the first half of 2026. This represents an increase of 6% year on year and, in terms of passenger numbers, marks the strongest first half-year in the history of the airport. Despite geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, demand for air travel remained high overall – particularly in the local Swiss market.

Air freight volumes fell to 217,317 tonnes (-1% compared to the first half of 2025), mainly due to lower import volumes.

In the 2026 summer flight timetable, 67 airlines are operating flights to a total of 212 destinations from Zurich Airport, marking a slight increase over the prior year’s summer timetable.

Slight increase in commercial and parking revenue as well as in the real estate business

Commercial and parking revenue increased by 2% to CHF 134.4 million in the first half of the year. Commercial activities continued to grow despite restrictions due to ongoing construction activities affecting the landside Airport Shopping mall. The growth was due in particular to greater passenger volumes and higher sales in food & beverage.

Real estate revenue increased slightly to CHF 100.5 million (+2%), once again making an important contribution to the consolidated result.

Progress on strategic infrastructure projects

In the first half of 2026, Zurich Airport Ltd. invested a total of CHF 268.7 million (prior-year period: CHF 422.9 million) in property, plant and equipment and projects, of which CHF 202.3 million was attributable to the Zurich site (prior-year period: CHF 307.4 million including the purchase of the Radisson Blu building for CHF 155.0 million).

The largest projects in Zurich include the development of the landside passenger zones, which will be opened in stages from autumn 2027, and the planned replacement of Dock A including the tower and dock base.

In addition, important political and regulatory prerequisites for the long-term development of the site were fulfilled during the reporting period. With the rejection of the night-time curfew initiative, the Zurich Cantonal Council committed to Zurich Airport’s existing operating hours from 06:00 to 23:30. In addition, the National Council advocated for legal protection of the current operating hours of national airports within the revision of the Federal Aviation Act.

Strong growth and important milestones in international business

Revenue from the international airport business increased by 16% to CHF 66.6 million, driven mainly by the continued positive development of the Brazilian airports.

In total, the international airports operated by Zurich Airport Ltd. welcomed more than 7 million passengers in the first half of 2026. The Brazilian airports once again recorded strong passenger growth averaging 13.8%. Non-aviation activities in Brazil also performed well, making an important contribution to the consolidated result.

With the opening of Noida International Airport, Zurich Airport Ltd. is now operating in India once again. Operations commenced on 15 June 2026. Flight operations will initially be limited to domestic and freight flights, with the route network subsequently expanding step-by-step. The ramp-up of operations is taking place in a challenging geopolitical environment. Airspace closures, higher fuel costs and airline capacity adjustments are affecting the pace at which new connections are being established.

Outlook

For the year 2026 as a whole, Zurich Airport Ltd. expects passenger numbers at the Zurich site to exceed 33 million, corresponding to growth of around 3% year on year.

When the new ordinance on airport charges enters into force on 1 October 2026, airport charges – which will be around 10% lower overall – will have an impact on aviation revenue for the first time in the final quarter. By introducing higher noise charges and a reclassification of noise classes, the new ordinance on airport charges will simultaneously increase the incentives for quieter operations, especially during sensitive night hours. Nevertheless, Zurich Airport Ltd. expects aviation revenue to remain stable in 2026 due to passenger growth.

Zurich Airport Ltd. anticipates further growth from its international concessions during the second half of the year.

Schweizer Tafel Foundation

For five months, the Schweizer Tafel Foundation was the beneficiary of the Charity Water project. The foundation collects surplus food that is still in perfect condition from producers, wholesalers and retailers and distributes it free of charge to social institutions such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, women’s shelters and food distribution centres. Having rescued more than 8,500 tonnes of food in 2025, the Schweizer Tafel makes an effective contribution to sustainability and solidarity: it saves food, conserves resources and supports people affected by poverty.

Outlook: Support for the Verein Werkstätte Drahtzug

Since June 2026, proceeds from the sale of Charity Water have benefited the Werkstätte Drahtzug Association. The Zurich-based organisation supports people with mental health conditions on their path back into working life and towards independent living. Through supported employment, vocational training and integration programmes, Drahtzug creates new opportunities for those affected and promotes their social and professional participation.

Long-standing Commitment

The Schweizer Tafel Foundation was the twelfth organisation to receive support through the “Charity Water” project. Since the project was launched in 2014, Zurich Airport Ltd. and Avolta have jointly supported social and charitable organisations. Previous partners include the Wisli Foundation, the Kinderhilfe Sternschnuppe Foundation and the University Children’s Hospital Zurich.

About the Airport Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte International Airport is operated by Concessionária do Aeroporto Internacional de Confins S.A. under a 30-year concession awarded in 2013 and handled approximately 13.3 million passengers in 2025. Zurich Airport Ltd. joined the project as a minority investor in 2013 and holds an indirect minority interest of 12.75%.

About the international business

Since Zurich Airport Ltd. was founded in 2000, international projects have been an integral part of its strategic orientation. With its 100% subsidiary Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA), the company develops and operates airports with a focus on Latin America and India - where the new Noida International Airport near Delhi recently went into operation.

The navigation systems are tested periodically to ensure their accuracy. Approaches to either side of, above, and below the published flight path are required to check the instrument landing systems. Some of the calibration flights will therefore also occur outside the usual approach routes. The reception of the rotating radio beacons must also be tested at greater distances. For this reason, calibration flights will also pass over areas beyond the airport. The signals received by the aircraft from the corresponding navigation systems will be recorded and evaluated. 

A twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 350 propeller aircraft will be used for the calibration flights. The aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation instruments and a high-precision flight measurement device. Skyguide air traffic control is responsible for the planning and execution of the flights.

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 4.3% to 26,356 take-offs and landings. The average number of passengers per movement decreased to 141.4 (-2.5% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was 82.9% (-1.4 percentage points vs. previous year).

A total of 35,313 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of July. This represents a decrease of 5.8% in freight volume compared to last year.

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 2.3% to 24,757 take offs and landings. The average passenger per movement figure decreased to 134.5 (-3.3% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was at 79.6% (-2.5 percentage points vs. previous year). 

A total of 34,978 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of June. This led to a decrease of 2.6% in freight volume compared to last year.

Drop off your baggage independently

Passengers travelling with the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Edelweiss, Austrian, Air Dolomiti and Brussels Airlines), Aegean Airlines, Air France, Air Baltic, Chair Airlines, Condor, Etihad Airways, KLM and SAS Scandinavian Airlines can check in their baggage independently at Self Bag Drop units.

Baggage tags can be printed at self-service kiosks in all check-in areas, in Arrivals 1 and in Airport Shopping by scanning the boarding pass. Baggage can then be dropped off at the corresponding check-in counter or, for the airlines listed above, directly at the Self Bag Drop units. The units are located in Check-in 2, Row 5, and in Check-in 3 for Lufthansa Group passengers.

To take advantage of the self bag drop service, passengers must be checked in online and in possession of their boarding pass.

Important: Baggage must never be left unattended at the airport. Unattended baggage may result in parts of the airport infrastructure being closed or even evacuated.

Passing quickly and efficiently through security check

At Zurich Airport, passengers departing locally will now be allowed to carry liquid containers up to a capacity of 2 litres in their carry-on baggage. For the return journey or for connecting flights, different regulations on the upper liquid limit apply depending on the airport. Passengers are advised to allow enough time for the security check, despite the lifting of the liquid limit. 

Important: Double-walled bottles (e.g. thermos) may only be taken empty as they cannot be checked by the devices due to the nature of the housing. It is best to present analogue photographic film separately and have it checked manually, as it can be damaged by CT scanners.

Waiting times at passport control: Follow the directions, use e-gates

With the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES), the entry requirements at the Schengen external borders are changing. For passengers from countries outside the EU and the Schengen area, biometric data is recorded and registered upon first entry.

For Swiss nationals, citizens of EU and EFTA states and persons with a Swiss or EU residence or settlement permit (e.g. B or C), the border control process does not change in principle.

Nevertheless, there may be longer waiting times due to the new processes and the high number of passengers. The personnel deployments of the Zurich Cantonal Police at the passport control counters are continuously adapted to the number of passengers.

Swiss nationals as well as citizens of EU and EFTA countries are advised to use the automated e-gates when entering and leaving the country if possible. They reduce the waiting time at passport control. The e-gates are available to people aged 18 and over to leave and people aged 12 and over to enter the country.

The new CT scanners represent the latest technology and enable three-dimensional analysis of hand baggage. As a result, they are capable of reliably screening both liquids and electronic devices. From 26 June onwards, liquids and electronic devices may remain in passengers’ baggage at all screening lanes in the Security Control Building. 

There is no longer any need to place liquid containers in a separate plastic bag. This accelerates the screening process and provides a noticeable increase in passenger comfort. 

Modernization of the Security Check 

The adjustment to the liquid regulation is linked to the comprehensive modernization of the security check. Since the end of 2025, the screening lanes in the Security Control Building have been gradually converted to the new CT technology. 

The objective of the project is to make the security screening process more convenient for passengers. Thanks to the new procedures, employees also benefit from optimized workflows. 

Important Information for Travelers 

Double-walled bottles (e.g. thermos bottles) may only be carried through security when empty. Such containers present a particular challenge during screening, as their multi-layer construction can prevent the new scanners from reliably detecting the contents and conclusively identifying the liquid as harmless. 

In addition, analogue photographic film may be damaged by CT scanners. Passengers are advised to present film proactively and request separate manual screening. 
Passengers are still advised to allow sufficient time for the security check. The recommended arrival times published on our website remain unchanged. 

For return journeys, different airports may apply different liquid restrictions. This also applies to transfer connections where passengers are required to undergo the security check again at a transit airport. Travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the applicable regulations before departure. 

Unchanged Regulation for Transfer Passengers 

The screening areas for transfer passengers and certain special processes have not yet been equipped with the new CT technology. The conversion of these decentralized locations will take place at a later stage. 

The existing regulation therefore remains in effect in these areas: liquids may only be carried in containers of up to 100 ml. These containers must be transported in a transparent, resealable bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre. 

Shanghai is currently the only destination on the Mainland China that is served directly from Zurich. Shanghai is one of China's most important industrial and commercial centres. The metropolis combines modern urban development with historic quarters and attracts both business and leisure travellers. In addition to China Eastern, Swiss International Air Lines also serves the route. The new connection further strengthens Switzerland's connection to one of the most important economic areas in Asia.

Strong signal for Switzerland’s accessibility 

Today’s decision by the Cantonal Council sends a clear signal in support of Zurich Airport and Switzerland’s international connectivity. Through its clear decision, the Cantonal Council underlines the importance of hub operations at Zurich Airport and recognises that the initiative is not compatible with federal law, as Zurich Airport’s operating hours are comprehensively regulated under federal legislation. 
 

Counterproposal: No improvement to the delay situation   

Zurich Airport Ltd. takes note that a majority of the Cantonal Council, contrary to the airport’s position, approved the counterproposal developed by the preparatory committee. The counterproposal and its measures will increase administrative effort without improving the delay situation.   

Should the counterproposal enter into force, Zurich Airport Ltd. will comply with the reporting requirement regarding non-compliance with the federally regulated night flight regime (06:00–23:30) and will in future also report such exceptions to the cantonal authorities.   

Should the initiative not be withdrawn, as publicly announced by the initiative committee, the final decision will rest with the voters of the Canton of Zurich.

India is one of the most dynamic aviation markets in the world. With the start of operations, the economic region around the Indian capital, Delhi, will receive additional services for passenger and freight traffic. Noida International Airport is helping to meet the increasing demand for air travel in northern India and further enhance connectivity to one of the world's most populous regions.  

Second airport project in India

International business is a key pillar of Zurich Airport Limited’s diversified business strategy and is becoming increasingly important. Noida is the company's second airport project in India to be developed from scratch after Bangalore. Following the successful project development, commissioning and management of Bangalore Airport, Zurich Airport Limited sold its last shares in Bangalore in 2017. In 2019, Zurich Airport Limited was once again awarded the contract for a major project in India: the construction and operation of Noida International Airport in the greater Delhi area – this time as the sole shareholder.

About Noida International Airport 

In a first phase, Noida International Airport will operate with a capacity of 12 million passengers per year and will have one runway, a passenger terminal and 25 stands. The development of the airport during the 40-year concession period is divided into a total of four phases – with a final capacity of up to 70 million passengers per year and two runways. The concession for Noida International Airport started in 2021. Capital expenditure for Phase 1 amounts to around CHF 750 million. This makes Zurich Airport Limited one of the largest infrastructure investors in India at present. 

About the operator

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) was established for the development, construction and operation of Noida International Airport. The company is responsible for the implementation of the public-private partnership project together with the government of Uttar Pradesh and the state concession authority Noida International Airport Limited. The local management team consists of Indian and Swiss executives. 

YIAPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA). ZAIA, in turn, is a 100% subsidiary of Zurch Airport Limited and develops and operates airports in Latin America, the Caribbean and India. 

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 5.1% to 25,318 take-offs and landings. The average number of passengers per movement increased to 134.3 (+3.4% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was 79.7% (+2.8 percentage points vs. previous year).

A total of 37,369 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of May. This represents an increase of 1.2% in freight volume compared to last year.

Ecological compensation measure near the airport 

Zurich Airport Ltd. is investing around CHF 50 million in the revitalisation of the Glatt River. The project serves as compensation measure for construction projects at Zurich Airport that impact conservation-worthy habitats. Because the project is located in close proximity to the airport grounds, the environmental impacts of the airport’s development can be offset directly in the region. 

Near-natural bodies of water with new habitats 

The Glatt River was straightened and channelled as part of river channel modifications undertaken around 150 years ago. The revitalisation project along the stretch between Opfikon and Rümlang is broken down into three stages. Over a length of 3.3 kilometres, it will recreate a diverse body of water with meanders, shallow water zones and natural shore structures. River variability, with different widths and depths, promotes flow diversity and creates valuable habitats for plants and animals. The first stage of construction, which is currently in progress in the Eichhof area, has a length of 1.2 kilometres. 

Shallow riparian zones offer protected areas for young fish to develop while steep cut banks create a habitat for wild bees and kingfishers. Around 1.8 hectares of new reed meadows – particularly species-rich and ecologically valuable wetlands – are also being created. A total of 345 trees and around 11,600 shrubs will be planted in the Eichhof section. 

The new course of the river was largely shaped through the use of existing materials. The natural combination of clay, sand, peat and occasionally gravel will allow the body of water to develop in a near-natural, location-appropriate manner. 

Project to be put on hold 

This first stage of construction will be completed in spring 2027. Until then, a further 200 metres of river will have been restored, and both the landscaping and pathways will have been completed. As previously announced, once the first stage of construction has been completed, the project will be put on hold until politicians have established the general conditions for dealing with PFAS-contaminated soil. 

All calibration flights will be carried out using a twin-engine turboprop aircraft of the type Beechcraft King Air 350. The aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation aids and a high-precision flight measurement device. Skyguide air traffic control is responsible for the planning and execution of the flights.

The runway extensions can be traced back to a comprehensive safety analysis carried out in 2012. Around 30 measures for improving safety margins were identified at that time – with one of the most important being the extension of the two runways 28 and 32.

Extensive work related to the requests completed

Since the cantonal referendum, Zurich Airport Ltd. has worked hard to thoroughly prepare the reports and plans for the two requests for planning permission. The submitted dossiers show the spatial and technical characteristics of the projects as well as their environmental impacts within the framework of the corresponding environmental impact reports. Specifically, this refers to the detailed planning of runways and taxiways as well as the relocation of the Glatt River and the cantonal road, among other things.

The two runway extensions differ significantly in terms of their complexity and construction time. While the extension of runway 32 will take place predominantly within the airport’s existing perimeter and requires comparatively minor structural work, the extension of runway 28 is significantly more complex. That project requires large-scale backfills, the relocation of the Glatt River and adjustments to the landside road, bicycle, pedestrian and utility line infrastructure, among other things. While the construction period for runway 32 is set to take around two years, the extension of runway 28 (including preparatory work) will take around seven to eight years. Construction on the two runway extensions is scheduled to start in 2030 at the earliest and depends on how the permit process progresses.

Operational advantages of the runway extensions

The extension of runway 28 by 400 metres to the west provides for a longer braking distance, which improves the safety margins for landings and rejected take-offs. It also increases the weather-related availability of the east concept (landings from the east, take-offs to the north) and helps to reduce delays and noise during evening and nighttime hours.

In future, practically all heavy long-haul aircraft will be able to take off on runway 32, which will have been extended by 280 metres to the north. This will enable them to start directly on runway 32 at Dock E, especially in late evening, instead of on runway 34, which prevents runway crossings and improves both the safety margin and punctuality. The runway extension will have no impact on landings from the north on runway 14. The threshold of this runway remains unchanged, even with an extension.

The Glatt River can remain completely unenclosed

The extension of runway 28 requires that the Glatt be diverted. In-depth planning for the formal request has shown that, contrary to earlier assumptions, it will not be necessary to culvert the Glatt. The river can remain unenclosed along its entire length.

The relocation and renaturalisation of the River Glatt will lengthen the course of the river from around 1 to around 1.4 kilometres and increase the riverine area from 3.5 to 9 hectares. Around 4 hectares of new reed meadows will be established along the new river in addition. The local recreation area will also be upgraded with new paths and a bridge for non-motorised traffic.

Adjustment of the security zone plan

Because the extension of runway 32 shifts the take-off threshold for long-haul aircraft by 280 metres to the north, the safety zone plan must also be adapted accordingly. A zone plan protects the airspace at and around airports from the addition of new obstacles (buildings, masts, wind turbines, trees, cranes, etc.).

Public review until the end of June 2026

The planning permission documents and the amended safety zone plan will be made available for public review from 1 to 30 June 2026 in accordance with the statutory requirements. The project is currently on display along the perimeter of the construction zone at the airport. Information boards have been erected at several locations.

IndiGo will operate the first flight from Noida International Airport, marking the start of scheduled services. Akasa Air and Air India Express will follow shortly after. Further details on flight schedules, destinations, and passenger services will be announced in due course.

Noida International Airport will play an important role in the growing air traffic around the Indian metropolis of Delhi and help relieve congestion at the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport. In a second phase, international destinations will also be served from Noida.

The airport is initially designed to handle 12 million passengers per year. Over the longer term, it will be further developed in several expansion phases. In its final stage of development, two runways and a capacity of up to 70 million passengers per year are planned.

Zurich Airport Ltd. brings its extensive experience in the planning, construction, and operation of international airports to the project and is responsible for both the development and the subsequent operation of the airport.

The Annual General Meeting at The Circle Convention Center also focused on the company’s long-term orientation and resilience. In his speech, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Josef Felder, emphasised that Zurich Airport Ltd. was in a good position and had a very successful year. This strength rests upon the diversified business model in particular, with its Aviation, Commercial, Real Estate and International divisions. International activities are also of key importance with regard to future challenges and the further development of the Zurich site. It remains necessary to build up resilience in a targeted manner, especially in a stable and successful phase.

Approval of new dividend policy  

The shareholders approved all items on the agenda in accordance with the formal requests of the Board of Directors. The Annual General Meeting approved the proposed amendments to the Articles of Association of Zurich Airport Ltd., including an amendment that establishes a basis for modern remuneration models for the Management Board and the Board of Directors. In addition, formal approval was granted for the correction of a formal error in the reserve allocation, which the company had already communicated in March. It was also decided to distribute an ordinary dividend of CHF 8.50 per share. This decision was based on the dividend policy adopted by the Board of Directors in the previous year, which stipulates a payout ratio of around 75% of net profit adjusted for one-off effects, provided that the leverage ratio of Zurich Airport Ltd. is low.

For the third time in a row, a vote was also taken on the non-financial reporting, which shows developments in the area of sustainability in the past year. 

Election of the Board of Directors 

The members of the Board of Directors standing for re-election, Claudia Pletscher, Corine Mauch, Stephan Gemkow and Josef Felder as Chairman, were elected for a further year. 

Stefan Paul, CEO of Kühne+Nagel International AG, was elected to the Board of Directors. He succeeds Guglielmo Brentel, who did not stand for re-election after 12 years. Zurich Airport Ltd. would like to thank Guglielmo Brentel for his great commitment. He contributed to the success of the airport as a well-connected expert in the tourism industry with entrepreneurial foresight. 

The representatives of the Canton of Zurich mandated to sit on the Board of Directors are Carmen Walker Späh, Head of Zurich’s Department of Economic Affairs, Beatrix Frey-Eigenmann and Beat Schwab. They were not elected in the Annual General Meeting, but delegated by the Zurich Government Council.

Stefan Paul was elected as a new member of the Nomination & Compensation Committee (NCC). The composition of this committee will be as follows: Claudia Pletscher (Chair), Beat Schwab, Stefan Paul and Josef Felder (without voting rights).

Meeting current requirements 

The new infrastructure in Zone West is designed to meet the current needs of general aviation service providers. It will offer hangar space for larger aircraft types, as well as a spacious and easily accessible building for passenger processing and office facilities. Its proximity to the existing heliport will also enable significantly shorter transfer times. On the landside, parking spaces for employees and passengers will be provided. The building will be accessible via an extension of Rohrstrasse. Construction started on 14 April 2026. According to current planning, the new infrastructure is scheduled to become operational in spring 2028. Zurich Airport Ltd. is investing around CHF 100 million in this project. 

Development of Zone West 

The construction of the general aviation terminal is part of the broader development of Zone West at Zurich Airport. The site, covering around 16.8 hectares, is owned by Zurich Airport Ltd. According to the Sectoral Aviation Infrastructure Plan (SAIP), the area is designated for apron expansions, handling facilities, aircraft maintenance, airport operations, and logistics, as well as the corresponding access infrastructure and parking. Various projects for Zone West are currently at different stages of development. Fourteen new aircraft stands have already been completed. 

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 2.7% to 21,492 take-offs and landings. The average number of passengers per movement increased to 130 (+2.8% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was 77.2% (+2.1 percentage points vs. previous year). 

A total of 39,993 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of March. This represents a decrease of 3.6% in freight volume compared to last year.

To ensure a smooth start to the holidays, Zurich Airport recommends careful preparation:

  Passengers are advised to check the applicable regulations on their airline’s website.

• Drop off your own luggage at self bag drop machines: This service is available to passengers of Lufthansa Group (SWISS, Edelweiss, Austrian, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines), as well as Aegean Airlines, Air France, Air Baltic, Chair Airlines, Condor, Etihad Airways, KLM and SAS.

• Print your own baggage tag: At special machines in all check-in areas, in Arrival 1, and in Airport Shopping on the way to check-in, baggage tags can easily be created by scanning your boarding pass. Baggage can then be dropped off at the check-in counter or – for the airlines listed above – at the self bag drop machines.
   

• Check baggage regulations before travelling: Passengers should verify which items are permitted in hand luggage or checked baggage. Special attention should be paid to batteries, electronic devices, gas cartridges, and power banks, as regulations have been tightened in recent months.

• Check the recommended arrival time at Zurich Airport: Use the “Find a flight” function on the airport website, select your flight, and indicate whether you’ve already checked in and/or are travelling with hand luggage only. The recommended arrival time will then be displayed as a helpful guideline.

Longer waiting times at border control

Since the introduction of the EU Entry/Exit System, third-country nationals are required to register their biometric data at border control. This includes personal details, travel document information, as well as a facial image and fingerprints. Registration takes place at self-service kiosks or staffed counters.

As a result, longer waiting times at border control are expected. For Swiss and EU/EFTA passengers, the process remains unchanged. All passengers are advised to allow sufficient time and to follow the recommended arrival times indicated via the “Find a flight” function.

Leisure programme for visitors

Even those not travelling can visit Zurich Airport as an excursion destination during the Easter holidays. Visitors can look forward to a diverse range of activities:

At Airport Shopping, a Läderach pop-up store offers a variety of Easter-themed chocolate creations, also available in all on-site Läderach shops. In addition, the Sablier restaurant in The Circle and the AIR restaurant overlooking the apron will offer a festive Easter brunch on Easter Sunday.

Observation Deck B is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 during the summer schedule. Observation Deck E is also open and can be reached on weekends and public holidays via the free shuttle bus from Observation Deck B.

From Good Friday to Easter Monday, public tours and sightseeing rides take place daily. A special highlight on Easter Sunday: between 14:00 and 16:00, the Easter Bunny and airport mascot Rolli Rollkoffer will hand out sweet treats on Observation Deck B.

New long-haul destination and more flights to popular destinations 

Edelweiss is adding Windhoek to its route network. From 1 June 2026, Namibia’s capital will be served twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays). 

In addition, Edelweiss is adjusting its offering on other international routes. Punta Cana will be served three times a week during the spring and summer holiday period. The connection to Malé will also be expanded during the spring holidays, with up to five weekly flights. 

Stronger connections to North America 

Starting in May 2026, American Airlines will introduce a seasonal daily service between Dallas and Zurich. 

Edelweiss is also expanding its offering in North America: Vancouver will be served daily from 13 June, while Halifax will remain part of the timetable until 18 October 2026, covering the autumn season in Nova Scotia. 

Return of Kuwait Airways 

After more than four decades, Kuwait Airways plans to return to Zurich with passenger flights in June. The route between Kuwait City and Zurich is scheduled to operate three times per week. 

Norwegian and China Eastern Airlines launch operations in Zurich 

With Norwegian, Zurich Airport is gaining a new airline from Scandinavia, further strengthening connectivity to the Northern European market. From late May to late June, Norwegian will operate flights between Zurich and Oslo twice weekly; from the end of June, the frequency will increase to four weekly flights. This complements the existing services on the route provided by SWISS and SAS Scandinavian Airlines. 

Starting in June, China Eastern Airlines will operate flights from Shanghai to Zurich three times a week. The flights will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

New destinations in Europe and additional frequencies 

SWISS is expanding its European network in summer 2026 with the seasonal destinations Poznań in Poland (three times weekly) and Rijeka on Croatia’s Adriatic coast (twice weekly), the latter being served exclusively in July and August. The hub carrier will also increase frequencies to popular destinations such as Naples, Ljubljana, Manchester, London Gatwick, Nice and Sofia. 

Edelweiss is also enhancing its short- and medium-haul portfolio: Glasgow will be served twice weekly during the summer, and Kefalonia will be added as a new Greek destination, also with two weekly flights. In addition, the airline is increasing frequencies and extending several seasonal routes, including Faro, Kalamata, Corsica and the Azores. 

Air Baltic will introduce a new service to Vilnius, improving connectivity to the Baltic region. Chair Airlines is adding Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Vlora in Albania to its schedule. Condor is increasing frequencies to Frankfurt, further strengthening the connection to the German hub. 

Note on the current situation 

The impact of the Middle East conflict on the summer timetable is currently difficult to assess. Adjustments to certain routes cannot be ruled out. 

Solid results trend 

In 2025, Zurich Airport Ltd. generated revenue of CHF 1,361 million (+3% compared to 2024). Revenue from aviation business increased by 5% to CHF 709 million, while revenue from non-aviation business of CHF 652 million was slightly down on the previous year (-0.2%). Adjusted for revenue from construction projects, revenue from non-aviation business grew by 2% to CHF 642 million. Operating costs rose by 1% to CHF 599 million. Adjusted operating costs (excluding expenses from construction projects) increased by 4% to CHF 588 million. 

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 4% to CHF 762 million. This led to a consolidated result of CHF 346 million (2024: CHF 327 million). 

Positive development of commercial and real estate revenue 

Commercial and parking revenue rose slightly by 0.2% to CHF 277 million in 2025, underpinned by the strong demand for air travel, although also thanks to the airport’s attractive location for visitors. This is despite the currently reduced retail offering due to the construction project to develop the landside passenger areas. The real estate business also continued to perform well. With real estate revenue of CHF 198 million, a new record was reached. The Circle has established itself as an attractive business and service centre for national and international companies.  

International airport business 

International business also grew in 2025. Excluding revenue from construction projects that does not affect the income statement, revenue from the international airport business grew by 10% to CHF 114 million. The largest foreign project of Zurich Airport Ltd. at the present time is the construction of a new airport in Noida, near Delhi in India, which is due to be opened shortly. 

The development of the five sites in Brazil was successful. Florianópolis Airport (FLN) recorded a new all-time high with over 1 million international passengers, consolidating its position as the country’s third-largest international airport. In Chile, the focus was on the planned completion of the concession for Antofagasta Airport as well as targeted infrastructure measures at the Iquique site.  

At the foreign airports in which it holds a majority interest, the Zurich Airport Group welcomed a total of 16.0 million passengers in 2025 (2024: 14.6 million). 

Further development of airport infrastructure 

Investments increased significantly during the reporting year. Zurich Airport Ltd. invested a total of CHF 716 million in property, plant and equipment and projects (previous year: CHF 571 million), of which CHF 503 million at the Zurich site (previous year: CHF 293 million). The largest single project was the replacement of Dock A, including the tower and dock base, along with related projects.  

In addition, the Radisson Blu Hotel, the last building in the central airport perimeter that was not yet owned by Zurich Airport Ltd., was taken over. Other focal points were the refurbishment of the baggage sorting system, the development of the landside passenger area and the construction of the Rächtenwisen cargo building. 

Changes in the membership of the Board of Directors 

There will soon be a change on the Board of Directors of Zurich Airport Ltd., with Guglielmo Brentel resigning at the end of April 2026 after twelve years in his post. The company would like to thank Guglielmo Brentel for his outstanding commitment. Kühne+Nagel International AG CEO Stefan Paul will be proposed as his successor to the Annual General Meeting on 17 April.  

Outlook 

Traffic volumes at the Zurich site are predicted to rise further this year. More than 33 million passengers are expected, a new record high. In the future, Zurich Airport Ltd. will continue to invest in future-proof infrastructure, new technologies as well as efficient and safe flight operations. In doing so, it is fulfilling the terms of its operating licence by ensuring the best possible network of direct connections in Europe and the most important global destinations, operating competitively and enabling hub operations.  

Airport charges are expected to fall by around 10% from 1 October 2026. Airport charges are subject to the cost recovery principle. Accordingly, the charges have been reduced because more passengers are expected in the coming years, over whom aviation costs can be spread, and the airport is planning investments carefully. 

In view of the positive consolidated result and the new dividend policy applicable since 2025, the Board of Directors is therefore proposing to the Annual General Meeting the payment of an ordinary dividend of CHF 8.50 per share. 

Allocation to statutory retained earnings 

The allocations to statutory retained earnings provided for in the individual stand-alone financial statements were not proposed to the Annual General Meeting from 2023 to 2025. This formal error has not had any impact on the level of equity. Zurich Airport Ltd. always had voluntary retained earnings and sufficient available earnings. Zurich Airport Ltd. regrets this error and has taken measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in future. A formal correction concerning this matter will be presented at the next Annual General Meeting in April.

Milestones to date

In December 2024, flights were conducted to test the navigation systems and a validation flight with the first landing of an Airbus A320 took place at the airport. Further calibration flights followed in October 2025. All infrastructures necessary for operation have been created and all relevant contracts have been concluded with partners – including those for taxi services, ground and air cargo handling, in-flight catering, aircraft refuelling, the operation of a hotel as well as catering and commercial areas. The provisional airport charges were also set and the navigation systems were put into operation by the Airport Authority of India. 

Airlines and services

The airport will initially serve domestic passenger traffic and cargo flights. International flights are expected to start later in 2026. IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India Express have all committed to operating flights to and from Noida. Other airlines have expressed interest in launching connections. Negotiations with cargo operators and major logistics companies are well advanced. A high demand for air cargo is expected. 

Connectivity to business and tourism regions

The primary access route for passengers to Noida International Airport is the six-lane Yamuna Expressway, which offers a direct link to the Greater Noida Area. Noida, Delhi, Gurugram and major cities in the Western part of Uttar Pradesh are also easily accessible. In addition, travelers can reach popular pilgrimage and tourist destinations such as Agra (home of the Taj Mahal), Mathura and Vrindavan within two hours by road. 

About Noida International Airport

In its first phase, Noida International Airport offers capacity to serve 12 million passengers annually with a single runway, passenger terminal and 25 aircraft stands. The development of the airport is structured into four phases over a 40-year concession period, ultimately reaching a capacity of up to 70 million passengers annually and two runways. The concession for Noida International Airport began in 2021. The total investment for Phase 1 amounts to approximately CHF 750 million. With this investment, Zurich Airport Ltd is currently one of the largest Swiss infrastructure investors in India. 

About the operator

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) was established to develop, construct and operate Noida International Airport. Together with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the state concession authority Noida International Airport Limited, YIAPL is responsible for delivering this public-private partnership project. The local management team is composed of both Indian and Swiss executives. 

YIAPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA). ZAIA is in turn a 100% subsidiary of Zurich Airport Ltd and is active in the development and operation of airports in Latin America, the Caribbean and India. 

To verify the instrument landing systems, approaches must be flown on the side of, above and below the published flight path. For this reason, some calibration flights will also take place away from the usual approach routes. The reception of the VOR/DME stations must also be tested from greater distances. As a result, areas well beyond the immediate airport vicinity will be overflown. The signals from the relevant navigation systems received by the aircraft are recorded and analysed. The next regular calibration flights at Zurich Airport are scheduled for late summer 2026.

Additional calibration flights between April and June

Due to international requirements, the northern approach procedure for runway 16 must also be validated during the week from 27 April to 1 May 2026. These flights will take place in the afternoon.

In addition, the glide path transmitter for runway 28, which is part of the instrument landing system, will be replaced this spring. Before the new transmitter can be put into operation, it must undergo comprehensive testing and verification. The required calibration flights will take place between 8 and 19 June 2026, both in the afternoon and at night until no later than 02:00.

All calibration flights will be carried out using a twin-engine turboprop aircraft of the type Beechcraft King Air 350. The aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation aids and a high-precision flight measurement device. Skyguide air traffic control is responsible for the planning and execution of the flights.

Planning Certainty and Further Development of the Offering 

The early renewal of the concession agreements provides planning certainty and enables continued targeted investment in the further development of commercial areas. At the same time, it ensures that passengers will continue to benefit from an attractive and comprehensive offering, even during construction-related restrictions as part of the Dock A replacement project.  

Innovation Hub at The Circle 

In addition, Avolta will further expand its presence at The Circle, Zurich Airport’s business and services centre, and continue to develop the location in a targeted manner. As part of “Avolta Next”, innovations will be developed and tested there and made visible across Avolta’s operations. This will position Zurich Airport as an innovation hub within the Avolta Group. 

Avolta at Zurich Airport 

Under the Zurich Duty Free brand, the company operates several duty-free shops across the terminal areas of Zurich Airport. In addition, it is active in the travel retail and convenience stores with Hudson Shops and in the food & beverage segment. In cooperation with partners, Avolta operates a range of dining concepts, including brands from the Autogrill Group, which became part of Avolta in 2023 following the business combination. 

Allani Children's Hospice Foundation in Bern

From July to the end of December 2025, the allani Children’s Hospice Foundation in Bern was the beneficiary organization. As Switzerland’s first children’s hospice, it provides children and young people with potentially life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families, with a home away from home – a protected space for respite, offering professional care and compassionate support. Its goal is to create moments of lightness and joy in life despite challenging diagnoses.

“This donation enables us to cover part of our operating costs. Unfortunately, funding for children’s hospices is currently still not sufficiently regulated, which means we have to finance the majority of our operations through donations. We are grateful for the solidarity shown by passengers and the airport community,” says Evelyne Schumacher of the allani Foundation.

Outlook: Support for the Schweizer Tafel Foundation

From January to the end of May 2026, the proceeds will benefit the Schweizer Tafel Foundation. The organization collects surplus, high-quality food and distributes it free of charge to social institutions such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, and food distribution centers. Having already rescued more than 8,500 tonnes of food, it ensures full plates instead of overflowing bins, combining sustainability with solidarity for people affected by poverty.

Long-standing Commitment

With the allani Foundation, Flughafen Zürich AG and Avolta have supported their eleventh organization as part of the “Charity Water” project. Previous partners have included the Wisli Foundation, the Kinderhilfe Sternschnuppe Foundation, and Zurich Children’s Hospital, among others.

Awards Based on Passenger Satisfaction

The ASQ Award is presented annually by Airports Council International (ACI) World, the global association of airport operators. It is based on comprehensive passenger surveys and evaluates 34 different categories, including infrastructure, food and beverage services, and hygiene standards. Since its launch in 2006, ASQ has been the world’s leading program for measuring airport passenger satisfaction, with more than 400 participating airports in 110 countries.

Focus on the Customer Experience

Zurich Airport is continuously committed to improving the customer experience. One example is its successful achievement of Level 3 in the ACI Customer Experience Program last year – shortly after its initial accreditation in 2023.

The program is considered the industry standard for airports and supports them in continuously enhancing the customer experience by developing a comprehensive view of the customer. Among other things, the program focuses on how customer feedback can be used more effectively to derive recommendations for action and incorporate them into everyday decision-making.

The negotiations began on 1 October 2025 and lasted around four months. Swiss International Air Lines AG, easyJet Europe Airline GmbH, a representative of scheduled airlines, a representative of business airlines, a representative of light aviation/air sports and a representative of freight forwarding companies took part in the negotiations. The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) oversaw the negotiations as an observer.  

Passenger-related charges set to fall  

The new charge period is expected to start on 1 October 2026. From then on, charges for airport users will fall by around 10% on average.  

The charges are calculated based on a multi-year outlook. These calculations take into account the expected passenger volume, construction projects in the aviation sector and the operating costs relating to flight operations. As the regulation does not allow profit to be earned from airport charges, they may only cover costs. The charges can be lowered because passenger numbers are expected to rise in the coming years – allowing costs to be spread over a larger base. At the same time, the airport plans its investments in a prudent manner.  

For example, the charge per locally departing passenger will now amount to CHF 30.40 (previously CHF 35.00). These charges include the passenger charge (CHF 18.20), passenger security charge (CHF 11.30) and solidarity charge for the service for people with reduced mobility (CHF 0.90). The charges are levied on the airlines in each case.  

Noise charges to increase  

The user fee for the baggage sorting system will be integrated into the landing charges in future, which will reduce complexity and simplify billing. Landing charges will therefore increase.  

The increased noise charges already announced and decreed by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), which provide for additional noise surcharges and a reclassification of noise classes during sensitive night hours, will now also be implemented with effect from 1 October 2026 when the new airport charges come into effect.  

If no further amendment requests are received, the charge regulations will apply as agreed from 1 October 2026. 

Maintenance of airfield areas 

Between April and October 2026, various airfield areas across the entire airport site will be refurbished, as is the case every year. In some instances, asphalt and concrete surfaces will need to be removed, which will generate noise emissions. 

In addition, part of the joint sealant on Runway 16/34 will be renewed to maintain surface sealing and prevent damage caused by penetrating water. This work will be carried out between March and August during nightly operational pauses. No significant noise emissions are expected. 

Optimisation of wastewater separation 

Technical modifications will be made at the pumping station Delta, west of the noise protection hangar, to optimise wastewater separation. This will also require noise-intensive sheet piling work. In some cases, sheet piles will need to be installed at night and removed again once the separation structure has been completed. Night-time work will be necessary when the sheet piles are located close to Runway 16/34 and the construction work cannot be carried out during the day for operational reasons. Currently, approximately 15 nights are planned for installation and 15 nights for removal. Work will begin in April and is expected to be completed in October. 

General maintenance work 

In connection with maintenance work, various construction works will be carried out throughout the year on the apron at the hotel stands north of the existing Dock A and at Taxiway Echo, west of the Airside Center. The works will take place both during the day and at night. This will also involve noise-intensive sheet piling work, some of which will need to be removed at night. At present, approximately 20 nights are planned for the removal work. Night-time work is required whenever construction activities must be carried out in the immediate vicinity of operational airfield areas and cannot be performed during the day for operational and safety-related reasons. 

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 2.7% to 20,006 take offs and landings. The average passenger per movement figure increased to 129.8 (+4.6% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was at 74.8% (+1.8 percentage points vs. previous year).

A total of 32,788 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of January. This led to a decrease of 0.1% in freight volume compared to last year.

Anniversary year full of experiences

To mark its 15th anniversary, Flughafen Zürich AG is organising special campaigns and events throughout the year. Every month, new highlights await visitors. The kick-off will take place on February 15 – from then on, on the 15th of each month, there will be free admission for everyone and live commentary on flight operations from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 
Other attractions include extended opening hours on selected days in summer, a holiday campaign with the Runway 34 flight simulator Super Connie and theme days in cooperation with Protection & Rescue City of Zurich as well as with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS), who will present a service dog show. Special occasions such as Mother's Day or Father's Day are also celebrated. Likewise, the Day Time Party, which sells out quickly, will take place twice in the anniversary year and offers dance-loving visitors a unique backdrop to special beats.

The decision was taken by the Board of Directors in conjunction with CEO Lukas Brosi. The Sustainability & Public Affairs and Corporate Communications departments will now be led directly by CEO Lukas Brosi. Responsibility for Human Resources will be transferred to the Finance & Services division under the leadership of CFO Kevin Fleck, and the Visitor Services & Events department will be integrated into the Commercial division under the leadership of CCO Stefan Gross. These changes take effect immediately.

As a result of these changes, Manuela Staub will be leaving Zurich Airport Ltd. The Board of Directors and the Executive Board would like to thank Manuela sincerely for her many years of dedicated work and valuable contributions, and wish her all the best for her professional and personal future.

A total of 440,930 tons of cargo were handled at Zurich Airport in 2025. Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 1.1% and compared to 2019, a decrease of 2.4%. 

Zurich Airport Ltd. will report in detail on the course of business in 2025 on 10 March 2026.

Key traffic figures December 2025  

In December 2025, 2,545,889 passengers passed through Zurich Airport, corresponding to an increase of 7.3% compared to last year.  

In December, the number of local passengers was 1,795,295. Transfer passengers amounted to 29.4%, equal to 746,048 passengers. 

Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 5.8% to 21,203 take offs and landings. The average passenger per movement figure increased to 135.6 (+1.7% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was at 78.0% (-0.2 percentage points vs. previous year).  

A total of 35,824 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of December. This led to a decrease of 4.2% in freight volume compared to last year. 

As in the previous years, Jet Aviation, in cooperation with Zurich Airport, is offering WEF guests the opportunity to refuel their aircraft with a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend.

Observation Deck B with extended opening hours

For aviation enthusiasts and spotters, Observation Deck B will be open during the WEF from Saturday, 17 January, to Friday, 23 January, daily from 8:00 to 20:00. Popular spotting locations are also situated on the west side of the airport and in Oberglatt. Special WEF tours will be offered again this year. For this reason, there will be no public guided tours or round trips on Sunday, 18 January.

Due to the increased security presence, temporary restrictions or closures of visitor facilities may occur at short notice during the WEF. This may also affect spotting locations along the airport perimeter fence or the observation deck. These potentially necessary security measures will not affect passengers. Access routes to the airport and passenger processes will remain unchanged.

Transporting fondue in your hand baggage – is that allowed?

Over the holidays, people pack along many gifts and Swiss specialities intended for friends and family abroad. We recommend clearing up in advance which items may and may not be carried in your luggage to ensure that you can pass through security efficiently. As always, the following also applies: Only take as much hand baggage as is permitted by the airline. 
Ready-made fondue may be transported in both hand baggage and checked baggage. The corresponding chafing dish, on the other hand, should only be put in checked baggage – and only if it contains neither fuel paste nor liquid and the chafing dish is free of vapours.

When in doubt, use the search function

Electronic gifts such as a remote-controlled car with built-in batteries may be carried in both hand and checked baggage as long as the battery's rating does not exceed 100 Wh, the capacity is clearly declared and the device has been secured against accidental activation. The permissible number of electronic devices with batteries is limited. Loose batteries, power banks and e-cigarettes, on the other hand, are only allowed in hand baggage and are subject to further requirements regarding their quantity and wattage rating. 
Winter sports equipment such as skates or gifts with liquids that do not contain hazardous items should be included in checked baggage. Additional rules apply to certain items such as lighters and avalanche backpacks. Fuel paste, fireworks and sparklers, as well as paints, acids and other toxic or corrosive substances are strictly prohibited and do not belong in luggage. 
A search function on the airport's website shows which items are allowed, which belong in hand or checked baggage and which may not be transported.

What's permitted in your luggage

Passengers are advised to transport gifts unpacked if possible. If the item needs to be inspected in greater detail during the security check, the gift wrapping may need to be opened. 

Getting the Christmas holidays off to a well-prepared start

The following tips will help ensure that the start of your journey is more pleasant:

• Self Bag Drop machines are available for passengers of the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Edelweiss, Austrian, Air Dolomiti and Brussels Airlines), Aegean Airlines, Air France, Air Baltic, Chair Airlines, Condor, KLM and SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Zurich Airport offers a diverse range of culinary events for anybody spending the festive season at home. On 21 December, the AIR Restaurant in Check-in 2 invites you to a Christmas brunch with a sumptuous buffet and live music. On 26 December, a festive seven-course brunch will be held at Restaurant Sablier in the Circle. 
A special experience awaits you at the turn of the year on 31 December: a New Year's Eve party with speed dating in the AIR Restaurant that combines a New Year's Eve menu with live music.

More Comfort and Efficiency with Consistent Security

At the heart of the new systems are the CT scanners for carry-on baggage. They enable three-dimensional analysis of luggage items. Liquids and electronic devices can remain in the baggage during screening at the new CT scanners, which speeds up the process and significantly increases comfort for passengers. The use of the new technology increases throughput per line while ensuring the quality and reliability of the controls.

The seven new CT scanners are also capable and certified to screen liquid containers with a capacity of up to 2 liters. Therefore, passengers screened at the new devices will no longer have their liquid containers of up to 2 liters confiscated, provided the contents are not classified as a security risk.

100ml Rule Remains in Effect for Now

As long as the conversion is underway and not all 26 control lines on the four floors have been upgraded, the 100ml liquid regulation will continue to apply at Zurich Airport. The reason is that during the conversion phase until next summer, passengers are not entitled to be screened at the new devices. Passengers will be assigned to the appropriate security control lines by airport personnel depending on passenger volume and availability of the new devices.

The plan is to adjust the liquid limit at Zurich Airport by summer 2026 at the latest, once the complete conversion to the new CT technology in the Security Control Building is finished.

New Security Scanners and Remote Screening

In addition to CT technology, new security scanners are also being deployed for the first time. They are used for alarm resolution after the metal detectors and complement the existing metal detectors, enabling more targeted secondary screening. A standardized pictogram shows where on the body an anomaly is located without displaying individual personal characteristics.

Another part of the modernization is remote screening. Security officers from the Zurich Cantonal Police no longer review the X-ray images of carry-on baggage directly at the control lines, but in a separate room. This spatial separation enables concentrated, ergonomic work in a quiet environment and at the same time relieves the control area, which additionally speeds up the process for passengers.

Conversion During Ongoing Operations

The conversion of the security control systems will take place in stages until summer 2026. After the commissioning of the new lines on floor G0, floors G3, G1, and G2 will follow successively. During the work, security control operations will continue at all times; however, there will occasionally be longer waiting times due to the construction work. Zurich Airport Ltd. thanks all passengers for their understanding during the conversion phase. In total, Zurich Airport Ltd. is investing approximately CHF 34 million in the renewal of the security infrastructure. After completion of all construction phases, all passengers will benefit from a faster, more efficient, and more comfortable control process.

Intercontinental connections as a federal mandate

Zurich Airport is Switzerland's gateway to the world and an international hub that is enormously important for the country. With more than 200 direct flights (more than 50 of which to intercontinental destinations), it plays the vital role of ensuring that our country is connected to the world’s major cities, thus fulfilling its federal mandate. This global accessibility is indispensable for Switzerland’s competitiveness. Zurich Airport relies on its current operating hours of 06:00 to 23:30 to safeguard its ability to continue fulfilling this mandate.

Ensuring good accessibility 

Compared to other European hubs, Zurich Airport already has the shortest operating hours. The current operating hours cannot be shortened any further, otherwise the airport will not be able to continue to operate as a hub and maintain good international connections. That makes keeping the last half hour (23:00 to 23:30) for reducing delays crucial. Without this option, many long-haul routes could no longer be operated and would be eliminated without replacement.

With its clear decision, the Commission recognises that the current rules already constitute a very tight corset for flight operations. Any further cutbacks would put the airlines stationed at Zurich Airport at a considerable disadvantage. Moreover, the initiative is not compatible with federal law. It would create unclear legal circumstances and arouse expectations that cannot be met.

Counterproposal to be critically examined

By majority vote, the Commission will submit a counterproposal to the initiative to the Cantonal Council. Zurich Airport Ltd. will critically examine it. Any counterproposal that imposes further restrictions on what already constitute the strictest general conditions placed on an airport or that includes additional requirements would be rejected by Zurich Airport Ltd.

Decision now up to the Cantonal Council

The Commission’s rejection of the formal request is an important step towards securing Zurich Airport’s current operations as a hub and its long-haul flights. The next step is for the Cantonal Council of Zurich to discuss the proposal.

Every evening, well-known national and international artists will take the stage, including Marc Sway, two-time Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae, German DJ and producer Alle Farben, as well as Bligg with his special “Wiehnachtsshow”. The children’s programme takes place in the early evening, before the music acts begin. Performers include children’s songwriter Andrew Bond, storyteller Tante Carmen, magician Dan White, and the popular children’s band Silberbüx.

Art enthusiasts can also look forward to 17 light art installations by artists from across Europe, displayed along the panoramic path. These works invite visitors to explore, engage, and interact.

Christmas Village at The Circle

Coinciding with the opening of Zauberpark, the Christmas Village at The Circle will welcome visitors starting 19 November. Around the main square, charming Christmas huts will offer a selection of warm food and festive drinks. In addition to mulled wine and punch, guests can enjoy raclette, soup, burgers, and traditional Swiss “Chäshörnli”. Sweet treats such as candied almonds, gingerbread hearts, and traditional “Magenbrot” complete the culinary offerings. A special highlight is the fondue hut, which can accommodate up to ten people and offers a cosy, shared dining experience.

At the centre of the main square stands the nine-metre-high “Sparkling Tree”, made of approximately 1,500 mirror balls. From 5:00 p.m., it becomes the focal point of an atmospheric light show, presented every hour on the hour.

Christmas Shopping, Advent Concert, and Airport Tours

For those in search of the perfect Christmas gift, Zurich Airport offers a wide range of shopping opportunities. Stores are open late into the evening, including Sundays and public holidays. In Airport Shopping, themed displays throughout the terminals offer gift inspiration – whether for an Advent calendar or a special present under the Christmas tree. From 17 to 26 December, dedicated helpers will be available at the gift wrapping station to wrap purchases made on site.

On Saturday, 6 December, Samichlaus (St. Nicholas) will be spreading festive cheer from 12:00 to 19:00 in Airport Shopping, the departure halls, and The Circle. On Sunday, 7 December, the Zurich Airport Orchestra will perform an Advent concert in Departure Hall 2 from 10:30 to 12:00. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of festive brunch options during the Advent season.

Aviation fans will also find plenty to enjoy during the festive season. In addition to the regular public tours, special guided tours and sightseeing rides will be offered over the holidays on the following dates:

• Wednesday, 24 December to Friday, 26 December 2025
• Wednesday, 31 December 2025 to Friday, 2 January 2026

The Bistro Aviolino on Observation Deck B will be open on these days from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. During the winter season, the bistro’s regular opening hours are Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..

Numerous organisations and airport partners involved
The aim of the “FORZA25” exercise was to enable the emergency services and organisations involved to train their procedures in an environment that is as realistic as possible and to gain valuable insights for a real-life emergency. In addition to various organisational units of Flughafen Zürich AG, the Zurich Cantonal Police, Schutz & Rettung Zürich, SWISS, various handling agents, Airport Emergency Teams, the Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Cantonal Civil Protection Company were also trained. At the same time, Zurich Airport’s back-end emergency organisation – the crisis team, crisis information and support services – was activated and trained.

Large-scale exercise scenario 
In the «FORZA25» exercise, the scenario centred on a lone perpetrator who intentionally triggered security-relevant incidents at several locations on the airport premises, creating a complex threat situation with multiple casualties. These included fire events, a traffic accident and a threat situation on an aircraft parked on the ground. 

A total of around 500 trained participants and around 150 extras took part in the emergency exercise. In addition, around 50 people were responsible for organising the exercise. The results will now be evaluated and incorporated into a detailed overall assessment. The findings from the final report are intended to contribute to the further optimisation of Zurich Airport’s emergency Organisation.

Year-on-year, air traffic movements increased by 3.4% to 24,625 take-offs and landings. The average number of passengers per movement figure increased to 143.3 (+2.3% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was at 83.2% (+0.4 percentage point vs. previous year).  

A total of 39,831 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of October. This led to an increase of 0.3% in freight volume compared to last year.

Anyone who would like to wear a lanyard can obtain one from designated distribution points at Zurich Airport:

• Check-in 1 PRM Pick-up Point (Meeting point for passengers with reduced mobility)
• Check-in 2 PRM Pick-up Point (Meeting point for passengers with reduced mobility)
• Information Desk Arrival 2

The offer is voluntary and free of charge for those affected. Wearers of a Sunflower Lanyard go through the normal process at the airport and are not entitled to any additional services. However, wearing the lanyard helps others recognize that the person may need more time or assistance.

To ensure the project's success, employees of Zurich Airport Ltd. and its partner companies have been trained and sensitized. They learn how to approach affected passengers, help, and maintain discretion. The Sunflower Lanyard is an internationally recognized symbol. With its introduction, Zurich Airport is becoming part of a global network that aims to make travel more comfortable for people with invisible disabilities.

About the World Travel Award

The World Travel Award is presented annually in various categories across the international travel and tourism industry and is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the field. For a nomination, factors such as customer satisfaction as well as the adherence to and further development of quality standards in products and services at and around Zurich Airport are evaluated. Once nominated by the World Travel Award committee, the winners are selected through a global online voting process. This vote includes both industry professionals and the general public. The winners are traditionally announced at a formal gala ceremony. This year, the event took place in Sardinia.

Outlook: Vote Now for Zurich Airport

After one award comes the next: Voting for the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2026 has begun. The Skytrax Awards are also among the most prestigious accolades in the international airport industry. They are based on the world’s largest passenger survey on customer satisfaction. Passengers rate service quality, infrastructure, and the overall travel experience at more than 575 airports worldwide.

Additional frequencies within Europe

easyJet is expanding its offering to the United Kingdom and Southeast Europe: the airline will introduce a new daily flight from Zurich to Pristina, Kosovo, and will operate two weekly flights to Bristol.

Condor will be present at Zurich Airport for the first time during the winter season and will increase the number of daily flights between Zurich and Frankfurt from two to three.

More long-haul flights

After a three-year break, Edelweiss will resume twice-weekly nonstop flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Maldives will once again be served exclusively by direct flights.

The airline is also increasing frequencies on several routes: Punta Cana will now be served three times per week; Puerto Plata and Montego Bay, twice per week from mid-December; Cape Town, five times per week; and Phuket, four times per week.

Stronger connections to Muscat and Abu Dhabi

The Middle East will be even better connected in the upcoming winter schedule. Oman Air is returning to Zurich and will operate four weekly flights to Muscat. At the same time, Etihad Airways is strengthening its presence: starting 1 November, the airline will increase flights from Abu Dhabi to Zurich from 13 to 16 per week, deploying an Airbus A321LR three times weekly.

First Airbus A350 in Service at SWISS

Following Edelweiss, SWISS will also put its first Airbus A350 into service this fall. The new aircraft landed in Zurich on 9 October 2025. The first passenger flight is scheduled for 25 October from Zurich to Palma de Mallorca, with the first long-haul flight to Boston planned for 20 November.

The winter timetable 2025/26 is valid until 28 March 2026.

Digital registration instead of passport stamping

The EES will replace the previous manual passport stamping. With the implementation, electronic records will be created upon entry and biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) will be captured. These data will be accessible to all Schengen states to facilitate personal identification and the monitoring of entries and exits.

The data collected will be stored centrally by the EU and remain valid for three years, provided that no new entry occurs within this period. After that, re-registration will be required.

Impact on border control

At Zurich Airport, kiosks for registering biometric data of third-country nationals will be available in the passport control hall and in Dock B. Alternatively, registration can be carried out at a manned counter. Pre-registration before travel is not possible, as the EU requires that verification and dossier creation take place directly upon entry.

Since the process takes more time, third-country nationals without a valid residence permit in Switzerland or another Schengen country should expect longer waiting times during the introductory phase and at initial registration. For travellers from Switzerland and EU/EFTA states, no changes apply.

Adjustments at Zurich Airport

At Zurich Airport, the Zurich Cantonal Police are responsible for border control and thus for implementing EU requirements. As the airport operator, Flughafen Zürich AG supports the operational implementation of the new system. To facilitate the introduction of the EES, various structural and organisational measures have been taken, including newly positioned kiosks and updated signage to ensure clear guidance.

Automated border control

Travellers with a biometric passport who are citizens of Switzerland, the EU, or EFTA, as well as holders of Swiss residence or settlement permits (B or C permits), will continue to be able to use the automated border control (e-gates) for entry and exit.
